Katie Ukrop’s distinct sense of style is a combination of her past in Kansas City, Kan., and her present gig as co-owner of Quirk Gallery. “I loved growing up in the Midwest,” Ukrop says. “People there are very laid-back.” Ukrop met her husband, Ted, at DePaul University and moved to Richmond to be with him about 17 years ago.
Ukrop was raising her two daughters and volunteering on the 17th Street Farmers’ Market Commission when she first met Kathy Emerson, and the two got along well. About two years ago, the opportunity to co-open a gallery came about, and Quirk was born. Emerson oversees the art while Ukrop directs the gift shop with an inventory spanning jewelry, home décor and gifts made by local and national designers.
Ukrop describes her own home’s style as “the many lives of Katie,” with a mix of Kansas-inspired prissy and Quirk-inspired mod. For more on Ukrop’s home, keep an eye out for a spring issue of Domino magazine, where it will be featured.
1. Vintage gold lace dress from Halcyon
Connie [Carroll] has such cute stuff, and it’s not expensive.
2. Painted and stenciled floors by Sunny Goode
I love the design and the light color. She aged it a lot, which keeps it from getting filthy.
3. Patagonia Trading Company chairs from V for the Home
These chairs were a splurge and an impulse buy. I loved the funky, modern styling. Plus, they’re comfortable and practical.
4. Ironstone
I love the white-on-white and I love when it’s sort of distressed and it looks old.
5. Art by Cindy Neuschwander
I love Cindy as much as I love her work.
6. Her children’s artwork
I love framing my daughters’ art. It really makes me happy. I’d frame it all if I had the wall space.
7. Silver napkin rings
My mom gives me one every year for Christmas, and my daughters have monogrammed ones. I even use them with fried chicken.
8. Annick Goutal Eau d’Hadrien perfume
I love the smell of grapefruit. It’s really light.
9. Sculptural brooch by Susie Ganch
It’s a piece of sculpture, and I’ve worn it several times. Plus, it’s white, which is one of my favorite colors.
10. Diet Coke
Nick’s makes the best Diet Coke in town. It’s in a jumbo cup with crushed ice.
