Arts Around the Lake, which takes place this Sunday (Oct. 4) at The University of Richmond, is one of my favorite fall shopping events. About 100 artists with work spanning everything from wall art to jewelry display their wares around the campus. The booths are nicely spaced out, making for a pleasant walk as you wander around the scenic UR campus on a fall day while browsing some beautiful art.

As I was perusing the list of this year’s artists, I saw a lot of new names (particularly jewelers) that I’m looking forward to checking out. I also saw a few of my old favorites and I thought I’d call them out so if you head to Arts Around the Lake you can make sure to look for their booths. Don’t forget, the holidays are around the corner! This is a great opportunity to start stocking up on gifts.

First off is Rhonda Corley, a mixed-media artist who creates impressionistic paintings of models wearing fun, colorful dresses. You can buy prints of her work at affordably low prices, and she even offers custom portraits of brides and bridesmaids.

I know I’ve called out the work of Mary Nell Jackson on this blog before, but her ceramic bowls and trays are perfect hostess gifts for the holiday season. You may want to pick up one or two and have them on hand to grab on the way to upcoming celebrations.

Donna Silvestri will be showcasing her distinctive, delicate knotted jewelry that’s attracted lots of local and national attention. This is a good time to pick up a piece for your sister, mom or best friend who lives in another state.

Is chunky more your style? Buy a necklace made by Melanie Bentley Shockley. She combines found objects, images in resin and beads for pieces that are eye-catching and completely one of a kind.

Happy shopping!
