Last night, Julep’s celebrated 10 years of serving New Orleans, Charleston, Savannah and Atlanta fusion food with a five-course meal prepared by executive chef Randall Doetzer and paired with Barboursville Vineyards wines, and I was lucky enough to be in attendance.

I have Sting’s song, “Fields of Gold,” stuck in my head. I’ve seen the golden fields of barley in Scotland, and they’re a romantic sight. My first encounter with barley came as a child. Campbell’s Scotch broth soup was a favorite, and I was entranced by the floating white bits. That barley didn’t have much texture to it. As an adult I have come to appreciate barley for its chewiness and earthy goodness.
