Of the 58 restaurants competing for Broad Appetit's $2,000 "To Dine For Award," Gibson's walked away the winner with its mini-lamb burgers. The competition's panel of judges, which included food editors and chefs from Tidewater and Washington, D.C., said the $3 burgers were "executed perfectly." (They are on the menu for $8.95.) The $1,000 runner-up was The Jefferson Hotel's Vidalia-onion soup. On Friday, look for recipes here.
The "To Diet For" dessert grand-prize winner was The Grapevine restaurant with its homemade baklava, which the judges described as "crispy but moist, with a great spice combination that made us want to eat it again." That's saying a lot, since they sampled more than 30 desserts. The "To Diet For" runner-up was the "Where the Wild Things Are" ancho-chile brownie with blood-orange ice cream by J. Sargeant Reynolds Culinary School.
