Some storm, huh? I hope that you all came through with minimal damage. Those of us who live in the South Side apparently got off pretty easy this time. It wasn’t too terrible. I was at work when the storm hit, in the Near West End, and that area took a serious hit. Limbs and trees everywhere. We’ve got power back today, though, and folks are cleaning up and returning to business as usual as quickly as they can.

Right after the storm, we heard a rumor that Willow Lawn had power, so the guys came out to meet me after tae kwon do. Apparently half the city had the same idea, because all of the food places had deep lines. We walked across the street to Willow Lawn Place but quickly found out that they didn’t have power. The very nice folks at the new Zinga frozen-yogurt store treated us to free yogurt — they had a lot of product they needed to liquidate before it liquidated itself. The guys had cinnamon-candy flavor, which the manager described as tasting like Big Red gum. The Boy preferred to think of it as “Sriracha Ice Cream,” and he was an immediate fan. As he devoured a large cup of it, he told me about the adventure he had at tae kwon do.

“Well, there was no power anywhere on Cary Street! So we thought at first that we wouldn’t be having class. But then we went into the classroom, and because there are so many windows, it was possible for us to see to have class. And a worker came in and opened all the windows, so that we could stay cool.” He raised his spoon and looked thoughtful. “There was a 56 percent chance that the worker actually worked there, and a 49 percent chance that she did not.”

You don’t say. Well, whoever she was, it was nice of her to pitch in during a time of need.
