The Lynwood chest
Over Labor Day weekend, Rooms To Go, the national chain that just opened its first Virginia store in Glen Allen, celebrated with a grand opening preview.

I stopped in on Sunday to check it all out. The store is huge, and as its name declares, it specializes in furniture groupings — whole rooms, of course — that can be purchased all-in-one or as separate pieces. (There are also accessories, rugs, lighting, mattresses and a large kids and teens section.) Great values abound, especially with their five- and seven-piece living, dining and bedroom packages.

For a family room needing a complete makeover, I think the “Gifford” collection (in its ivory option) would make a great choice. With a midcentury sensibility in its sofa and loveseat, plus a three-piece streamlined table set with tapered mocha finished legs and crackled-glass tops (it also comes with an hourglass-shaped chocolate-colored lamp), it's a superb pick. It’s all priced at just $1,500.

As for a bedroom, the “Cambria Heights” set really drew my attention. Its platform bed and coordinating chests have horizontal, louver-like drawers and slat details. Constructed of 100 percent eco-friendly solid wood with brushed black accents and a honey finish, the line has a refreshingly distinctive, rustic but contemporary look. The five-piece grouping includes a three-piece bed, dresser and mirror set for $800.

While these sets certainly make for quick and affordable room redos (not only design-wise but with next-day delivery as well), I always like to look for single pieces to mix in with items I already have. I love an eclectic look and find inspiration in really mixing things up.

For example, the “Lynwood” chest (pictured), with its cool woven appearance, would make a stylish singular addition to a bedroom, office or den for $600. Rooms To Go's silver-leaf accent chest is gorgeous, too, for just $400. And their “Pryia” lamp with its half-circle nickel base and an oversized square shade looks far more expensive than its $120 price.

While the holiday weekend provided a great preview, and the store's now open, Rooms To Go will have its official grand opening on Saturday, Sept. 15.

Hours for the 9901 W. Broad St. store are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday, 12:30 to 6 p.m.
